How do you feel your students have learned the material as compared to a traditionally structured course?

The students have done very well and like the online environment. Students think it is much harder than the traditional course because the learning is of such an independent nature. They have told me that they think the tests are challenging. They like the forum and opportunity to post questions and/or correspond with me (and OSC Instructors) via email. They also like that the course is available 24/7--there are no restrictive hours; so, it provides for a flexible schedule. The students and I have determined timelines for materials and they have been very good to adhering to them. I think that the flexibility which Internet access allows, helps with this task. There is no excuse because the course, materials and tests are always available. Students like the online environment as a change to the traditional classroom setting.

Why would you suggest this course to other schools?

I would suggest this course to other schools that would like to offer computer programming opportunities to their students and presently cannot, because either they do not have the resources, such as an instructor with the expertise or enough students to fill a full class. With the OSC curriculum, any school can offer an independent study and be confident students will receive thorough lessons in any of the subject areas offered. The tracking of test scores and progress makes it turnkey for an advisor to follow a student’s progress.

How do you feel your students have learned the material as compared to a traditionally structured course?
I know my students are learning the material comprehensively. This has been recently demonstrated by the fact two students from our school have qualified to compete in the National BPA Conference, one in C++ and one in Visual Basic. An independent study using the OSC curriculum is how they were introduced to these subjects.
